part d — you, the fan

The implementation of Writer Seminars this year has exposed me to a large variety of styles, syntax choices, diction usage, and worlds by different authors that I hope will inspire my future writing.

My group presented on F. Scott Fitzgerald, an author I admire and have wanted to know and understand more deeply for some time now. Specifically, being exposed to his poetry has allowed me to witness how elements of lyrical poems and simplistic short stories can be combined effectively. My emulation of his poem City Dusk can be found here. I hope to continue exploring the various worlds and stories he created.

The genre that interested me the most this year was, to my surprise, sci-fi . I found myself interested in the ability to create new worlds and societies and situations, particularly dystopian worlds, which is something I didn’t consider myself capable of doing. I took inspiration from every writing seminar I saw, in that I took little particularities of diction, syntax, structure that I liked and applied it to my own writing.

The writing of my fellow classmates has amazed and humbled me this year, and if I were to pick out a few I especially enjoyed reading they would be the following – Masooma, for her ability to write with both complexity and simplicity, Harmehar, for her strong voice and sense of detail, Emily, for her writing steeped in realism, and Victoria, for her poetry that explores emotion to amazing depths. The select above are simply a small portion of my classmate’s writing that has inspired me this year.
